These 23 songs were recorded live in a single marathon session at the Cowgirl rehearsal space in the cold January of 2012. They were never intended for public release and were merely created for our own reference before heading into the studio to produce our first album. The band was, I don't know, maybe two or three months old so we were still learning many of the songs and they are full of mistakes (at one point my guitar even drops out of one Steve's songs for reasons unknown).
The raw nature of the recordings and our loose knowledge of the songs finds us channeling early Pavement in a way that we never did in the studio. We often cited Pavement as the band we were most trying to emulate during the first year of our run and this is the closest we ever came to actually sounding like Slanted and Enchanted. It also paints an accurate picture of what a typical Cowgirl practice sounded like (just imagine a lot of banter about sci-fi films and the sound of Miller Lite cans being cracked opened in between takes).
The hubris of the opening track is hysterical to me. We originally intended to start the album with that extended instrumental. It's also funny to hear songs like "Lemmings" and "Amelia Earhart," which were staples in our early sets but faded by the time we went in to do the album. Many of these songs were never properly recorded. Some were never played again.
